Seiko And Rowing Blazers Collaborate On Three New Seiko Sports 5 Models
Seiko unveils two limited editions and one special edition watch in collaboration with Rowing Blazers’ founder and creative director, Jack Carlson.
What better way to jumpstart the summer months than a throwback to the ‘90s? Seiko’s latest collaboration with Jack Carlson and Rowing Blazers does just that by adding the fashion brand’s signature preppy yet playful touch on the iconic Seiko 5 Sports model.
The juxtaposition between Seiko’s classic model and the addition of Rowing Blazers’ signature color flair perfectly articulates the New York-based clothing brand’s mantra of combining streetwear with vintage British and American fashions.
A Modern-Day Collaboration
This collaboration marks Jack Carlson’s premier endeavor in the watch world, making the founder and creative director all the more excited for this partnership: “Collaborating with Seiko is a dream come true,” Carlson said in a press release. A watch collector himself, Carlson has collected both modern and vintage Seiko’s as well as selling vintage models on the website.
And as Seiko celebrates its 140th anniversary, the watchmaker continues pursuing its mission to “Always Stay One Step Ahead of the Rest” by collaborating with Carlson as the watches in the partnership pay homage to classic Seikos while still having a modern element of amusement.
A Classic Shake Up
The three models are accented with a specially engraved caseback featuring one of Rowing Blazers’ “house codes,” that being a musing skeleton, to signify: time flies. Not to mention, each watch comes equipped with a matching stainless steel bracelet, an additional nylon military-style strap (a Rowing Blazers must-have), as well as a collector’s tin to house the timepiece.
One of two limited editions, and the first watch Seiko and Jack Carlson designed, is the SRPG49. Limited to 500 pieces, it features a checkered-print unidirectional rotating “Rally” bezel as well as a signature red and white striped second hand. Moreover, the SRPG49’s additional nylon strap is an attractive seafoam green.
Also limited to 500 pieces, the second model, the SRPG51, features a prominent blue unidirectional bezel with a red zig-zag pattern and a rainbow military strap for the ultimate explosion of yuppie street wear style.
Last but certainly not least in the collection is the SRPG53. This special edition piece features an eye-catching red, green, yellow, and blue bezel that conjures nostalgic memories of the classic Simon game and showcases the Seiko 5 Sports using a cheeky old-school charm.
Finally, the three black-dialed watches come in a 42.5mm stainless steel case that is water-resistant to 100 meters and powered by the automatic 4R36 caliber with a 41-hour power reserve.
A Playful Perception
Brynn Wallner, the founder of Instagram watch sensation Dimepiece, got up close and personal with the collection and told Watchonista, “I love how the Rowing Blazers x Seiko watches are so consistently in line with the Rowing Blazers Spirit. The devil really is in the detail of these watches. It’s cool to see a playful approach to watch design, and it’s very much in line with my personal approach to the hobby.”
Horology meets the high-spirited with this partnership, as form and functionality go hand in hand with the versatility of the watches. A contemporary classic, these pieces are sure to be a staple in any modern prepster’s collection.
